Description
Rippin' Riders is the first snowboarding game for the Sega Dreamcast. Much of the mechanics of the game are derived from the popular series of Cool Boarders titles for the PlayStation.

Before the action begins there are seven available riders to choose from. Each rider has numerous boards to choose from as well as different clothing. At the start of the game there is only one playable course. Hidden characters, boards, outfits, and courses will all be exposed through extensive play. In total there are at least 9 characters, 12 boards, and 5 courses.

The modes of play include: Match Race, Half Pipe, and Free Race. Match Race is strictly a two-player option that enables split screen competitive play. Free Race is a one-player mode in which you will be pitted against only the dangerous environments of the downhill terrain. In the Half Pipe mode tricks are the focal point.

During the split screen action of match play it is possible to shrink the size of your opponents viewing area, as well as enlarging your own playing area by successfully executing difficult tricks. If the playing area is made small enough a victory will be earned by the competitor who earns the required number of trick points to shut his opponent out. While victory in the Match Race can be obtained by this method of shutting your opponent out, it can also be obtained by simply crossing the finishing line before your opponent.

Players are ranked in a few categories: total time elapsed, highest trick score, and overall score. Placing in the top three in any category will enable you to save your name amongst the leaders. Newly opened tracks, characters, and boards, as well as rankings, can all be saved on the VMU in four memory blocks.
